In hermetic philosophy, in the Corpus Hermeticum, attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, hyle corresponds to "the matter of the world 2" as the first creation of God, and principle of the world: "It is necessary to know in the first place, that God and the World, which among the Greeks is called Hyle, was before anything else that God created."
